Increase or Decrease your Business Supply (MIC)

The strength of the electrical connection applied to your business is called the Maximum Import Capacity (MIC)

If you recently added electrical equipment that requires extra power, your current MIC may no longer be sufficient for your needs, and an increase in MIC may be required. Also, if you removed some electrical equipment from your commercial premises, your current MIC level will need to be reviewed. A new MIC may be applied for in such cases.

Note: In all cases please consult with your electrician/consultant on your appropriate MIC for your commercial premise, as ESB Networks do not provide this service.

View the Distributed Use of System Rules for Application of DUoS Tariff Group (PDF | 269 KB) applicable to your MIC.

Note: If you have not significantly increased the amount of electricity you are using and you are experiencing voltage fluctuations, there could be a voltage problem in your premises or on our network. Find out more about voltage problems here.

When we receive your application we will prepare a written quotation letter and connection agreement for increasing your supply. The connection agreement details your future MIC, DUOS, and MCC codes

This document (PDF | 24KB) explains the Distribution Use of System (DuoS) and MCC codes that appear in ESB Networks' connection agreements.

See a list of all ESB Networks' Charges (PDF | 629KB) related to supply connections.

When increasing your MIC, you may also need to upgrade your main switch board to carry the increased load. We recommend you consult a registered electrical contractor or engineer to evaluate this.

A larger network transformer may also be required which involves the construction of a new substation building. You will be required to provide the site for the new substation.

If alterations are required, an ETCI certificate will be provided by your electrical contractor on completion of the work. Notification of the ETCI certificate must also be received electronically by ESB Networks from your contractor's regulatory body.
