As part of this commitment, we’ve developed a generation minimum cost calculator - a new online tool aimed at generation applicants who would like to apply for a connection to the distribution network.
The calculator provides an estimation of the minimum costs associated with generator connections to the distribution system operator (DSO) network >200kw. It will not provide the final amount of money that will be offered to a customer, as a detailed study will always be required to identify any other potential costs.
You may also wish to use our online Availability capacity heatmap which provides an indication of the available transformer capacity at substations.
This is a new online tool aimed at generation applicants who would like to apply for a connection to the network.
The purpose of the generation minimum cost calculator is to provide clarity on the minimum costs required to connect to a generator greater than 200kW to the distribution system operator (DSO) network. It uses the CRU (Commission for Regulator of Utilities) non-contestable standard charges to add the minimum items required for a generator depending on the MW’s, voltage level, distance and type of conductor selected.
A breakdown of the required items with costs will be displayed. Any extras such as line or transformer uprates will not be included. It can be used anytime throughout the year. The figures will be revised annually once the new charges are published.
You should use the generation minimum cost calculator before you apply to ESB Networks for a generation connection to the distribution network.
The calculator will help you to find out what minimum costs are involved to connect to the distribution network.
It is an easy to use tool, customers simply input three options and the calculator will give the applicant an immediate headline cost. You can then expand that cost to see the full breakdown of items that make up that cost. The cost will be an indication of the minimum cost a customer will be facing.
It is aimed at all generation applicants, including community projects who would like to apply for a connection to the distribution network.
