ESB Networks

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) has given ESB the responsibility for managing Ireland’s electricity networks. This means ESB is in charge of both the power lines that carry electricity around the country (transmission), and the lines that bring electricity to individual homes and businesses (distribution). ESB’s team that handles this work is called ESB Networks.

Connecting Ireland’s power network

  • ESB Networks has over 3,000 employees all over the country. We build and run the medium and low voltage electricity systems, including power stations, overhead lines, poles, and underground cables.
  • We always put our customers first, no matter which electricity supplier they use.
  • Our work is funded by 'use of system' charges that are billed to every customer by their electricity suppliers. These charges are checked by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU).
  • Supporting competitive electricity markets – We operate, install, maintain and read meters for our expansive customer base.  Over 1.9m smart meters are now remotely read daily. Standard meters are read up to four times a year.
  • Powering the future – We're committed to a lower carbon energy future powered by renewable sources, such as wind farms.
