Making it easier and safer to connect low carbon technologies

From 6th January 2025, anybody wishing to install or connect a low carbon technology (LCT) device, i.e., a solar panel, EV charger or heat pump, to the low voltage (LV) electricity distribution network in Ireland, should choose a product that is recorded on ESB Networks’ LCT Register.

What is the LCT register?

  • The LCT Register is a list of devices that have been validated as conforming with those requirements ESB Networks considers appropriate to permit their connection to the LV electricity distribution network.  An overview guide to the LCT Register is available here.
  • Two registers exist:

Frequently asked questions

I am an LCT device manufacturer and wish to have my product included on the LCT register – what do I need to do?

ESB Networks has appointed Threepwood Consulting as its LCT Compliance Agency, to maintain the LCT register on our behalf. The LCT compliance agency is ESB Network's point of contact with LCT device manufacturers for the purpose of product registration. A guide to the registration process is available here.

Device manufacturers must contact LCT@threepwoodconsulting.com to commence the registration process.

I am a customer or contractor - applying to connect generation to the LV distribution network?

When applying to ESB Networks to connect generation devices, e.g., solar PV, you will be required to complete the relevant application form, i.e., NC6, NC7 or NC8. Just open the LCT Register file, then search for and record the LCT Register reference number of your specific device on the application form.

For those seeking a government grant towards the cost of LCT, it is recommended that you also consult SEAI's website and its Triple E register to ensure you chose a product that meets SEAI’s requirements.

I can't find my LCT device on the LCT register?

In the event that an LCT device does not yet appear on the LCT Register, you may need to provide ESB Networks with copies of specific relevant documentation with your application form, e.g. certificates of conformance to EN standards and type test certs. Your electrical contractor should also contact the device manufacturer, to encourage them to complete the necessary steps to register that device.
