How long will it take for ESB Networks to come out and cut my trees or branches?
This will be discussed during the on-site assessment with the ESB Networks Network Technician.

I have some specimen trees can I get my own tree surgeon to cut them back, is this allowed?
Yes, you can but it is at your own cost. You must still contact ESB Networks beforehand to arrange an on-site assessment. To arrange a tree cutting assessment log on to ESB Networks Online Account.

What happens to the timber from the trees?
If the timber is cut by ESB Networks within our close proximity zone for the relevant voltage of the overhead line, then ESB Networks will remove the timber, if the customer so wishes. If the timber which is cut is outside the close proximity zone then the landowner will be responsible for removal of the timber. This will be discussed in detail during the on-site assessment with our Network Technician.

Will I be charged for any tree cutting?
Where it is deemed that ESB Networks is responsible for cutting the timber, there is no charge to the customer for essential tree cutting.
Where the customer is cutting the timber, and where ESB Networks is facilitating this by switching out the network, and/or temporarily removing the network/dropping the line, then this will also be free of charge provided that;
- Adequate notice is given
- The work is done during 9:00 – 16.30 Mon to Fri.
- Traffic control is not required

Will you cut down the trees completely or will you just trim the branches back?
Normally we trim the branches to maintain a safe distance from electrical network. The on-site assessment will determine the best course of action.

Can I cut the trees myself?
No. Under no circumstances should you or your tree surgeon attempt to cut the trees or branches within 6 meters of the electricity network yourself. Remember, electricity can jump gaps, so you don’t need to come into direct contact with the electricity network to be seriously injured or killed.
Tree cutting contractors are specialists who know how to deal with live wires safely when cutting trees.

There are electricity lines presently running through trees on my property – is it ok for me to cut them?
No. If the trees or vegetation that require cutting is within 6 meters of electricity wires or electrical equipment, you can apply for a free tree cutting assessment through your ESB Networks Online Account. Once you have completed your application, we will arrange to assess the location within 4-6 weeks. The assessment will determine whether the timber will need to be cut by you, the customer, or by ESB Networks.
