There are four main types of electricity meters in use;

  2. Electronic meters
  3. Pay as You Go meters
  4. Smart Meters

Smart Meter

Using digital technology, smart meters record your usage and will be read automatically from 2021

Smart Meter Upgrade

24-Hour Mechanical Meter

Mechanical meters has a revolving disc with one row of numbers. Wattless Meters differ, using the letters kVArh.

Domestic Electronic Meter

Your electronic meter has an electronic register with one electronic meter display capable of scrolling through multiple readings.

Pay As You Go Meter

ESB Networks installs these meters for customers when requested by their respective electricity suppliers.

Day & Night Mechanical Meter

This meter has a revolving disc with two rows of numbers, the top line is the day reading and the bottom line is the night reading. In this image the readings are 31684 day and 70033 night.

Business Electronic Meter

Your electronic meter has an electronic register with one electronic meter display capable of scrolling through multiple readings.
Safety Tip:Please be careful when reading your meter, especially if it is up high or in an inaccessible place.
