Disconnect the electricity supply from a building

You may wish to contact ESB Networks to completely disconnect the electricity supply from a building in any of the following scenarios:

  • A fire has occurred in the building
  • The building is to be refurbished
  • The building is unoccupied and may be a safety hazard
  • The building is to be demolished
  • You are undertaking maintenance at your property

Note: You do not need to request us to disconnect your supply if you are moving out and expect the building to be occupied soon again or that it will be unoccupied only for a short time.

Helpful guides

How to disconnect a building and /or get the meter removed

Disconnections should be requested by contacting your supplier and giving your account number or Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN). You can find a list of supplier contact details or your supplier's telephone number is at the top of your electricity bill. Inform your supplier that you wish to have your supply disconnected. If you have more than one meter, please provide meter numbers (RM Numbers) available on the face of the meter.

Meter types

If you wish to have the meter(s) removed, your supplier can arrange for this to happen at the same time as disconnecting supply.

IMPORTANT: If there is demolition work planned for the building, you must contact us in advance. This will enable us to ascertain if a meter removal and service removal is required, and if any other appropriate work is required for safety reasons.

How to get a meter removed from a building after it has been disconnected

Contact ESB Networks and ask for the meter to be removed.

When you do contact us, it is important to have your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN). The MPRN number can be found on an electricity bill for the meter /connection point. The MPRN number is a unique reference number that tells us exactly where you are on the electricity network.
