Upgrade the wiring of your electricity meter

To make sure your electrical installation meets current safety and performance standards, we offer a service to upgrade the wiring of your electricity meter, specifically the ‘tails’ connecting the meter to your electrical installation. Your Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) will need to submit a Completion Certificate to Safe Electric for the new, upgraded tails and associated works. A call can then be set up for ESB Networks and your Registered Electrical Contractor to complete the upgrade at the meter (ESB Technician) and at your Main Distribution Board (your REC).

Before you proceed

Our rewiring service is typically needed:

• After a new electric shower, heat pump, EV charger (or other appliances which consistently use a large amount of load) have been installed
• When the internal fuse board has been upgraded on your property

If you are upgrading your tails for the purposes of Electrification of Heat and Transport, please also review the Guidance Document Cutouts for Electrification of Heat and Transport before proceeding with installation of the Low Carbon Technology.

Occasionally when a rewiring service to upgrade tails is being carried out, installation of an ESB isolator may be required. This need will be assessed by the ESB Networks Technician.

Please note, the installation of an ESB isolator switch when the tails from your meter to your distribution board are already to standard is not a service that ESB Networks provides. An ESB isolator switch should not be confused with a customer isolator switch that may be required with the installation of an additional appliance such as an EV charger or Solar PV inverter.

Additional information

• You must first register for an ESB Networks online account and link the MPRN of the property where the rewiring work is needed.
• This upgrade service focusses solely on upgrading the 'tails' on your electricity meter.
• Your electrical contractor will carry out the necessary work on your installation or home wiring. When completed, they will need to submit their safe electric certification.
• Once we receive the certificate and the application is submitted through your ESB Networks online account we will upgrade the meter's wiring 'tails' to ensure they meet the demands of your upgraded installation.
• Upgrading the meter 'tails' can improve the safety and reliability of your electrical supply, ensuring it meets modern standards and can handle the demands of your installation.
• Please note there is a fee of €200.00 plus VAT and this can be paid using your ESB Networks online account.
