Planned outages

Planned outages

Sometimes we need to interrupt your supply to carry out essential maintenance. This is called a planned outage.

We appreciate the inconvenience that interruptions cause to our customers and we try wherever possible to carry out work while the lines are live. However, on some occasions, power lines and cables have to be switched out for safety reasons, as it would be otherwise too dangerous for our network repair crews to work on them.

Please have your 11 digit ESB Networks MPRN to hand when you call. This is shown on your electricity bill starting with M10...

Keeping you informed of an outage

We will always send you a notification card at least two days in advance if we have to interrupt your electricity supply for maintenance work. In addition to the postcard, we may send you updates on the planned outage via SMS.

Planned outages are shown as an amber pin on PowerCheck, along with updates on over-runs.

Safety warning

You should regard the connection to your house as being LIVE during all outages as electricity supply may be restored at any time, sometimes for brief periods, while work is being carried out.

  • During any interruption it is advisable to switch off all electronic equipment and any other equipment which could result in a safety hazard when the power is restored.
  • If you have an ELECTRICAL GENERATOR please ensure that it complies with and is connected in accordance with the NSAI - National Standards Authority of Ireland wiring rules so that it cannot feed into the ESB Network System. This is in the interests of your own safety and that of other customers.
