Change business level of supply

Happy business team in a meeting

Increase or decrease your business supply (MIC)

The strength of the electrical connection applied to your business is called the Maximum Import Capacity (MIC).

Why you may need to increase supply in your premises

Change in electrical equipment

If you recently added electrical equipment that requires extra power, your current MIC may no longer be sufficient for your needs, and an increase in MIC may be required. Also, if you removed some electrical equipment from your commercial premises, your current MIC level will need to be reviewed. A new MIC may be applied for in such cases.

Note: In all cases please consult with your Electrician/Consultant on your appropriate MIC for your commercial premise as MIC costs may vary.  ESB Networks do not provide this service.

Change in MIC

A change in MIC may also require a change in DUoS group. Please refer to the Rules for Application of DUoS Tariff Group | PDF 269 (KB).  This document outlines the rules for applying the correct Distribution Use of System (DUoS) tariff (DUoS Group) to a customer’s premises or connection point.

Note: In all cases please consult with your Electrician/Consultant on your appropriate DUoS Group for your commercial premise as DUoS costs will vary according to the size of your connection. DUoS costs can be found in the ESB Networks Statement of Charges | PDF.

Step by step guide

Step 1 - Apply online

ESB Networks is only accepting applications via our online connections platform until further notice. Any customer who cannot access our online platform should email esbnetworks@esb.ie for assistance.

Apply online
Step 2 - Get a quote and connection agreement

When we receive your application we will prepare a written quotation letter and connection agreement for increasing your supply. The connection agreement details your future MIC, DUOS, and MCC codes.

See document Distribution Use of System (DuoS) and MCC codes that appear in ESB Networks' connection agreements.

See a list of all ESB Networks' Charges (PDF | 629KB) related to supply connections.

See Basis of Charges for Connection to the Distribution System (PDF 178KB) Sect 6:3:3 for charges which may apply to your request to reduce your MIC.

Step 3 - Check if you need a switchboard upgrade

When increasing your MIC, you may also need to upgrade your main switch board to carry the increased load. We recommend you consult a registered electrical contractor or engineer to evaluate this.

A larger network transformer may also be required which involves the construction of a new substation building. You will be required to provide the site for the new substation.

If alterations are required, a completion certificate will be provided by your electrical contractor on completion of the work. Notification of the completion certificate must also be received electronically by ESB Networks from your contractor's regulatory body.

Learn more about the certification process here.

Step 4 - Make a payment

Once you have your quote, you can make a payment by whichever method suits you best:

ESB Networks DAC,

Accounts Receivable,

Sarsfield Road,

FREEPOST,

Licence No. FCK 724,

Wilton,

Cork.

Step 5 - Connection agreement

Please remember to return the connection agreement in the pre-addressed envelope as your MIC upgrade will not be in effect until returned.

Note: In some circumstances increasing your MIC may require the local electricity network to be upgraded. If so, you will need to make a capital contribution for the upgrade as part of your payment. This contribution will be detailed in your quotation.

See a list of all ESB Networks' charges related to connections here (PDF | 629 KB).

Step 6 - MIC is increased

We will then carry out the necessary work to enable your MIC to be increased.
