It can be daunting when buying new electrical appliances if you’re not familiar with the specifications and terminology, and what these mean in the grand scheme of energy efficiency. So, we’ve put together a simple guide to appliance ratings and a brief overview of what to look out for so you can continue to manage your electricity usage at home.

What is energy labelling?

Energy labels help consumers make a decision based on the energy efficiency, energy consumption, and performance of an electrical product. It’s a very useful method for knowing exactly what you're buying in terms of its operating condition, which results in greater control over your electricity usage. If you’re using energy efficient appliances in your home, such as fridges, TVs or cookers for example, you will be using less electricity compared to less efficient models.

How do I read the label?

There are many types of labels as each electrical appliance has unique features, they require their own label. Whenever you decide to upgrade electrical appliances at home, try choosing the most efficient products to help take more control of your electricity usage.

What energy rating should I go for?

Energy ratings begin at A+++, their most efficient rating, and finish at G, their least efficient rating. If you’re thinking of buying a new appliance, try choosing a model that is as close to an A rating as possible. Did you know, an A+++ energy rating means that an appliance is at least 30% more efficient than a standard A rated appliance?
