During the peak hours of 5-7pm is when we all need to be mindful of what electrical appliances we use around the home. Peak time refers to the time of the day when the electricity demand on the system is typically at its highest.  With a few simple changes to your day-to-day activities, you can help reduce this demand, ultimately resulting in greater electricity efficiency for your household. Thinking differently and creating new habits can support greatly.

Simple changes to keep in mind

  • If it’s possible, you could use a time function on your washing machine, dishwasher and dryer so it only operates outside of these hours.
  • Devices such as TVs, laptops, phones and game consoles use electricity when they are plugged in, even if they’re not being used. So, either unplug them from the socket, or turn off the power switch at the wall when you are finished using them.
  • Sometimes we switch lights and lamps on and forget to turn them off if we move to another room at home.

Did you know?

  • Turning off devices at the wall can save over 200kWh a year, equivalent to boiling a kettle 800 times!
  • Your fridge freezer works a lot harder to cool your food when there’s a build up of ice and frost. Just 2 millimeters of ice will make your freezer use 10% more electricity to sustain its temperature! So if you fancy giving your freezer a quick defrost, today’s the day.
  • Looking to become more flexible when it comes to cooking and cleaning?
  • If you have one, maybe consider using a slow cooker or air fryer instead of the conventional oven. Modern slow cookers consume as little as 0.07kWh at a low setting which is 20x less electricity than your average electric hob.

Easy habits to get into can make a difference, like when your dishwasher is full of dishes and ready to run, consider using eco mode. Or when you're putting on a clothes wash, the 30@30 rule is a great way to control your electricity usage. Most detergents nowadays can be used on lower temperatures such as 30 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes, but always check the packaging.
