Pilot of Scale: Mullingar and surrounding areas
What is this pilot about?
- Our Pilot of Scale in Mullingar and surrounding areas is about testing flexibility services with our customers as a Distribution System Operator (DSO).
- ESB Networks will procure flexibility services from contracted Flexibility Service Providers (FSPs) operating on specified MV feeders fed from the Mullingar Bulk Supply Point. A Bulk Supply Point is a point of connection between transmission and distribution system.
- FSPs will be able to engage with all kinds of customers; Domestic, Commercial & Industrial and Small, Medium Enterprises. Flexibility services can be provided by eligible customers (such as generation, storage or demand response customers, either individually or via aggregators). These customers will be to alter their consumption or generation pattern to support ESB Networks in its role as the Distribution System Operator, to deliver a safe, secure and efficient distribution system.

How to get involved?
The first tender under the Pilot of Scale is the Mullingar BSP and this covers Mullingar and the surrounding area.
This tender will initially be for Flexibility services commencing delivery in Q4 2023 for a period of two years.
