Distribution System Security and Planning Standards

New Distribution System Security and Planning Standards

As part of the ESB Networks’ Innovation Strategy, under the Smarter HV and MV Customer Connections Innovation Project, the Distribution System Security and Planning Standards were reviewed to establish how the standards needed to evolve to meet the changes in the electricity industry taking account of the requirements of binding National and EU Energy Directives and Network Codes, whilst cost effectively maintaining a safe, secure and reliable distribution system.

These Standards are effectively the rules by which we connect our customers to the electricity distribution network. The new rules were developed during the innovation project with significant collaboration and consultation with stakeholders.

Among the updated standards, there are new standards which will help facilitate more renewable energy on our network with the introduction of non-firm access for distributed generators and flexible solutions on our network with the introduction of non-wires alternative solutions; both of which will be implemented in a phased manner over time.  This is outlined in the foreword section of the Distribution System Security and Planning Standards and the roadmaps in the Non-Firm Access for Distributed Generators Guide and the Non-Wires Alternatives to Network Development Guide.

The new Standards and Guides have recently been approved by the CRU and are available to view by following the links below.
