The purpose of this “Expression of Interest (EOI) for Radical Innovation Project Ideas” is to encourage our stakeholders to provide input and ideas in the radical space to add to our existing portfolio of ESB Networks Innovation projects. This is to support our target for 5% radical projects across ESB Networks innovation portfolio.

This document provides an opportunity to:

• Provide your input and ideas on radical innovation projects to add to our existing ESB Networks Innovation portfolio.
• Provide a background to the call and details the portfolio split of innovation projects across the 3 broad horizons of innovation: Incremental, Breakthrough and Radical.
• Give an overview of Innovation in ESB Networks across our 3 Innovation Pillars; Climate Action, Future Customer and Network Resilience.

The purpose of this document is to report, in summary, projects that have come through the initial assessment and are currently in ESB Networks’ pipeline of possible future innovation projects as detailed in our Innovation consultation “Innovating to Transform the Electricity Network”.

At ESB Networks our definition of innovation is to implement new ideas for the enduring benefit of our customers and business. We have developed robust governance and processes to identify, evaluate and deliver Innovation projects.

This document gives an overview of our processes, from how we identify, evaluate and scope projects to how were deliver and transition and disseminate our innovation projects and their learnings into ESB Networks and our stakeholders. 

At ESB Networks, we’re delivering the electricity network for Ireland’s clean electric future and Innovation is a key enabler in our Networks for Net Zero Strategy.

We are delighted to issue our Annual Innovation Public Consultation “Innovation to Deliver Networks for Net Zero.”  The consultation details our recent innovation activities and the projects ongoing in ESB Networks in 2023.

At ESB Networks our definition of innovation is to implement new ideas for the enduring benefit of our customers and business.  ESB Networks has developed its innovation strategy, in conjunction with robust governance and processes, to advance new innovative solutions to support the delivery of our PR5 programme and our “Networks for Net Zero” Strategy. Our strategy will enable the delivery of the Governments CAP 2023 and supports the decarbonisation of the electricity system by 2040. Robust processes associated with the identification of innovative opportunities are a key part of ESB Networks’ Innovation Strategy. This requires us to consider the disruptive trends and identify how we see the energy landscape developing in the next decade and beyond. We have developed an Innovation Strategy Framework to manage every stage of the development and implementation of our strategic initiatives, from setting the vision to establishing Business-As-Usual (BAU).
